Sat, 28 January 2006 Oprah loves with intensity. She also punishes with fervor. She apologized to the public for backing up James Frey whose book she turned into a bestseller after selecting it for her book club. Thesmokinggun.com ran an investigative article on its web site which started to unravel the made-up details James Frey added to his story. In one word, the author duped his editors and Oprah. "I have been embarrassed by this...I feel really duped," said Oprah showing signs of frustration and anger. Now on her own terms, Oprah who came under heavy criticism for making a phone call backing James Frey on the Larry King Live decided to bring the author back. This time, all the lies uncovered by the smoking gun would have to be revealed. Frey continued to insist that he still views the work as a memoir, not a novel. Oprah has enough power to make the author admit he lied to everybody towards the end of the show. "This hasn't been a gread day for me," Frey said. "I feel like I came here and I have been honest with you. I have, you know, essentially admitted to..." "Lying," Winfrey completed the sentence for him. "To lying," agreed Frey. "It's not an easy thing to do in front of an audience full of people and a lot of others watching on TV..." Some of Frey's Lies Frey who got fried by Oprah on the show confessed to a few lies. He was cross-examined point by point by Oprah. He became very uneasy answering questions. It seems that he was not ready for the lines of questions. We don't think he had a script. He was caught offguard by the questions that Oprah launched at him. Well, the lies he confessed to. "All the way through the book I altered details about every one of the characters," Frey said, to disguise identies. He did not spend 87 days in jail. He only spent two hours in jail. His girlfriend did not commit suicide by hanging herself. She committed suicide by cutting her wrists. "I think most of what they wrote was pretty accurate," he said of the smoginggun.com report on his lies. He even added, "they did a pretty good job." Now, he is compelled to drop his lawsuit against them. He threatened to sue them in a last-ditch scare tactic. His lawyer wrote the Smokinggun web site to announce the author's intent. Fri, 27 January 2006 Oprah felt duped. She Fried Frey over his lies in "A Million Little Pieces on her show. It turns out that the book is just about a million little untruths. How can something like this happen? Oprah is not taking it quietly. She is not taking all of the criticism of selecting this book without having a plan. Somehow, she got James Frey, author of "A Million Little Pieces, to fess up. That's right, James admitted to lying about many things in the book. Many readers will not forgive him soon for saying he spent days and weeks in Jail. Oprah forced him to admit that he lied about the details of one of his girlfriends' death. Appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show, James Frey was like a deer in the the spotlight. He finally said that most of what the Smoking Gun reported is true. Way to go, Oprah! Don't let anybody take away the trust readers put in you. Will readers receive a refund from the author, the publisher and those who were behind the book? Fri, 20 January 2006 Oprah selects Elie Wiesel's book, Night. And a million little things start to happen. First Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com and other shopping sites are figuring out how to categorize the book. They don't want the fiasco Big Jim or James Frey knew a few months ago. By the way, Night is the story of Mr. Wiesel's family in the concentration camp. It has been around for a while. The book was first written in Yiddish. Elie Wiesel translated it into French. His wife translated into English. It was one of the recommended readings in my literature class. It is a very interesting book.
