Sun, 3 June 2007 ![]() Johnny Vera made history in traditional, conservative Fresno. He/she is the first person to become Prom Queen at Roosevelt High School in Fresno. He is a transgender person who got the title. Many people are writing and talking about this event in the prom world. Here is what they are saying. "Johnny Vera, at 6-foot-4 in heels, towers over enthusiastic supporters as he sports the tiara representing his selection as queen for Roosevelt High's prom" "Johnny Vera is not your average prom queen. He's a transgender teen on a mission to spread positive attitude. That's why this crown means so much." "Nothing in life is impossible everything is possible if you can dream it, it can happen," says Vera. High school can be hard most everyone would agree often times differences are magnified and kids can be mean but Vera says, "not at Roosevelt High," and his crowning moment is proof. Since the beginning of Vera's quest to be queen, winning the royal title was never the point. "Years from now it's not going to matter who won what's matters to people was the impact," said Vera."Well, there was a first at Fresno High. Cynthia Covarubias is a girl who wanted to become prom king there. "Johnny is a transgender. A boy, who wants to appear to his classmates, and the world as a girl. Johnny says, "You know, to start, I was never a typical boy. Cause you know, it's just a fact." Johnny who also goes by Crystal is a cheerleader, and was class vice president last year. He was also elected homecoming prince two years ago, as a boy. For him queen is just another step. Johnny says, "First of all, I want to run for queen because I've been very involved in my school. You know, I get along with a lot of people. I feel that I have made an impact in my school." He was inspired to run after Cynthia Covarubias from Fresno High ran for prom
king last month. Her candidacy changed school district policy, clearing the way
for Johnny to run. Cynthia lost the race for king, and not everyone at Roosevelt
will vote for Johnny." See the Video: http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?section=local&id=5290481 After winning, here is Johnny Vera's comments: ""For me, it's about more than a crown. It's about saying to people, 'Come out and be who you want to be,' " Vera said. A crowded, urban high school scene paused to listen. "You have to say, 'I am who I am, and I'm proud of who I am. My spirit will never be down on the floor.' " Category: California Prom Accesories -- posted at: 1:38 PM | ||
